On June 23, 2020, we sent a letter co-signed by 24 academics, activists and psych survivors, to 35 ministers and officials in federal, provincial and territorial departments of health, justice, and adjacent programs. Unfortunately we did not get a single response to our letter.
Our letter urged them to take interest in the UN's call for reducing the spread of covid-19 in psychiatric facilities by releasing people wherever possible, and also in the UN-CRPD, which calls for an end to compulsory treatments for people with psychosocial disabilities. We noted that the UN's advice is to let people with disabilities lead the way in creating safer and more effective alternatives to institutionalization and forced "care".
